What is Man, It's All One Big Thing about?

It is a collection of true stories from the life of Steve Tyler, retired Clinical Social Worker, father, husband, and lifelong resident of Indiana. The chapters range from laugh-out-loud accounts of household disasters and social misadventures to moving reflections on fatherhood, loss, and the small philosophical discoveries hidden inside everyday life. It is memoir-adjacent, but funnier than most memoirs you’ve read.

It’s best described as a collection of linked personal essays. Each chapter stands alone as its own story, but together they form a portrait of one man’s life told with clarity, humor, and the kind of self-awareness that only comes from decades of listening to other people’s problems for a living.

The title comes from a chance encounter with a hitchhiker named Alfred Brundage, who Steve picked up on a highway in Indiana in 1981 while driving to a Grateful Dead concert. Alfred summarized his entire philosophy of the universe in one sentence: “Man, it’s all one big thing and it just does what it does.” Steve has been thinking about it ever since — and it became the philosophical backbone of the book.

The book is written for adult readers. It contains mature humor, some frank language, and stories involving alcohol, human folly, and the occasional moment of existential terror. It is not graphic, but it is honest — in the way that only stories drawn from real life can be. It is entirely appropriate for anyone who appreciates candid, thoughtful storytelling.

Yes. Steve Tyler writes only from life, no composite characters, no invented drama. The gas can really happened. The wedding in California really happened. The Buffkin house really happened. If anything, the truth has been understated.
